Notary Prep
What do I need before a notary appointment?
Have every page of the document present and fill in all blanks other than signature lines. A notary cannot legally help you fill in blanks, so speak to the relevant parties before the meeting if information is missing.
What identification does a California notary accept?
Identification must be original, non-expired or issued within the last five years, and photocopies are not accepted. Accepted forms include a California DMV driver’s licence or ID card, a United States passport, a foreign passport, an ID card or driver’s licence from another state, a Canadian or Mexican driver’s licence, a United States military ID card, a California state or local employee ID card, and a Consular ID.
Does the name on my ID have to match the document exactly?
A California notary cannot proceed if there is a discrepancy. The rule is “less, not more” - if the ID reads “David Lee Brooks” and the document reads “David L. Brooks” that is acceptable, but not the other way around.
What if I do not have valid identification?
You may present two Credible Witnesses who each have their own acceptable identification. Credible Witnesses are generally used only when valid identification does not exist. Let us know when the appointment is set up if you intend to use witnesses.
